Nanaimo Airport Thriving

A thriving airport not only gives residents more travel options, but has a significant economic impact on the whole region. Even before the launch of the new WestJet Encore non-stop service to Calgary in late June, you could have placed YCD in this category.

The Airport has posted a year over year growth of 6.4% in passenger numbers to the end of MayThe Airport has posted a year over year growth of 6.4% in passenger numbers to the end of May. “In fact May was the largest single month increase we have seen this year, with over 2,200 additional passengers travelling through the airport,” shares Mike Hooper, Nanaimo Airport President & CEO. “We don’t have final numbers just yet for June, but early projections show this trend is continuing.”

The growth in passenger numbers is great news for the airport, but it also comes with a new set of challenges. A couple of times each day the airport has multiple flights departing about the same time. “Based on the increase in passenger volumes, it can take up to 30 minutes to get through security screening,” explains Hooper. “To reduce the stress of travelling, we strongly recommend that passengers arrive at the airport at least 90 minutes before their flight.” This is particularly important during the two peak flight times between 7:25am and 8:10am or between 12:30pm and 12:50pm.

It’s clear the days of checking-in last minute, then running to the gate are gone for passengers travelling from YCD. Thankfully the terminal enhancements completed in 2010 have increased services and comfort in the departure lounge for those that clear security early. Hooper says, “We have plenty of seating, TVs with news and sports, free internet connection, a play area for the kids, plus food and beverage services inside the lounge.”
