Airport celebrates heroes, safety, and heritage
Community, safety, and service are at the heart of everything Nanaimo Airport does. These values come to life in many ways, including remembrance, teamwork, and a shared pride in Nanaimo’s rich aviation story.
Honouring service and sacrifice
On November 11, Nanaimo Airport Commission will mark Remembrance Day with a moment of silence at 11 a.m. The tribute honours all Canadians who have served during times of conflict and peace.
The airport’s Air Terminal Building proudly bears the name of Nanaimo-born Raymond Collishaw, a World War I hero and air vice-marshall. His courage and commitment continue to inspire the airport’s work today.
Putting safety first
Staff, tenants, and volunteers joined the annual Foreign Object Debris (FOD) walk during Airport Safety Week.
They spread out across the apron to remove small items that could pose safety risks to aircraft and personnel. The walk is largely symbolic and helps build teamwork and awareness.
Trained operations staff conduct multiple FOD checks daily to keep runways and aprons clear for arriving and departing aircraft.
Celebrating 80 years of aviation
Nanaimo Flying Club recently marked its 80th anniversary, celebrating a legacy that dates back to the Second World War. The airport back then had been an air force glider pilot training facility and wartime emergency airfield. Local aviation enthusiasts transformed it into a base for civilian flying.
Today the club boasts about 125 members and continues to support general aviation and flight training at YCD.
Making travel memorable
Gino Fournier, his wife Doris, and daughter Katherine are the latest to attest that great journeys often begin at Nanaimo Airport.
The family won the Weekend Getaway to Tofino contest draw, offered by the airport and Nanaimo Night Owls baseball team. Their prize was a 3-night stay at Long Beach Lodge Resort, a $500 gift card to its dining room, massages at Sacred Stone Spa, and a whale watching tour with Ahous Adventures.
