Vegetation | Organics | Soil
Nanaimo Airport manages vegetation and soil to support safe operations, maintain stable ground conditions, and promote responsible land stewardship.
Environmental considerations are integrated into development and maintenance activities, with soil disturbance managed through erosion and sediment controls, proper material handling, and timely stabilization of exposed areas.
VEGETATION MANAGEMENT
Airfield and surrounding lands are routinely maintained to manage grass height and discourage wildlife presence. Invasive species, including Scotch broom and Himalayan blackberry, are removed and, where appropriate, replaced with native vegetation to enhance site stability, reduce erosion, and support long-term sustainability.
Tree growth within flight paths is monitored and managed to maintain compliance with Obstacle Limitation Surfaces (OLS), ensuring safe and efficient aircraft operations.
Structured procedures are in place to manage soil conditions and respond to spills, with monitoring and response measures designed to protect land and drainage systems.
All activities are supported by regular reviews to guide maintenance and ensure continued environmental performance.
