Air | Energy | Emissions

Nanaimo Airport manages air quality, energy use, and greenhouse gas emissions through practical, continuously improving initiatives.

These include transitioning equipment to electric alternatives, improving energy efficiency, incorporating renewable diesel, and working with partners to support lower-emission ground operations and the use of sustainable aviation fuels.

MANAGING OUR FOOTPRINT

Electrification is a key focus, with the airport operating electric vehicles and equipment across its fleet.

Since 2019, gasoline use has been reduced by 53.9% and diesel by 48.5%, contributing to a 33.8% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions.

Nanaimo Airport has been Airport Carbon Accredited since 2019 and maintains carbon neutrality through verified offsets. In 2025, the airport achieved Level 3 certification, reflecting its work with airlines, tenants, and partners to better understand and reduce emissions across the broader airport community.

Collaboration remains central to this progress. Through the Environmental Advisory Committee, the airport works with stakeholders to advance shared sustainability goals. The long-standing Aviation Noise Management Roundtable also supports ongoing dialogue with industry and local residents.

Together, these efforts enhance air quality, reduce energy use, and lower emissions, supporting a sustainable future for the airport and the surrounding community.
