ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT

Environmental management at Nanaimo Airport is guided by an Environmental Management System based on international standards ISO 14001 and the Plan-Do-Check-Act cycle for continuous improvement.

The Nanaimo Airport’s Environmental Policy and associated environmental factors are built into daily operations.  This includes reducing emissions, improving energy efficiency, using sustainable materials, and managing waste responsibly.  The airport also takes a proactive approach to land, vegetation, water, and wildlife.  These efforts help reduce environmental impacts and support long term sustainability.

Our Environmental Management System provides a clear structure for policy, planning, implementation, monitoring, and review.  It helps identify impacts, set goals, put controls in place, and track performance through audits and corrective actions.

Through the Environmental Advisory Committee, Nanaimo Airport works collaboratively with airlines and tenants on shared environmental goals, improving communication and accountability.

The Nanaimo Airport Commission is committed to managing environmental matters within its control and influence and support responsible stewardship across airport operations and the wider community.  Six segments have been developed to manage these environmental objectives.

  • Air | Energy | Emissions

  • Materials | Procurement | Waste

  • Planning | Development | Infrastructure

  • Vegetation | Organics | Soil

  • Drinking Water | Groundwater | Wastewater

  • Wildlife | Habitat | Conservation
