Nanaimo Airport’s plans for future extend beyond runway

30 October 2026

Nanaimo Airport’s (YCD) location in Central Vancouver Island creates chances for new development. These opportunities can support the airport, attract businesses and help the regional economy.

Building a stronger commercial base is part of YCD’s plan for its 522‑acre site. Extra income could help pay for future improvements and reduce the airport’s reliance on passenger revenue.

The airport does not receive any operating funding from municipal, regional, provincial or federal governments.

About one‑third of YCD’s current revenue comes from non‑aeronautical sources such as parking and leases. Adding more types of revenue can help make the airport stronger and more resilient. It could also spark new economic activity and jobs in the region.

Available land could be used for aviation and aerospace businesses, cargo and logistics operations, warehousing and distribution, and light industrial or commercial development.

Other businesses could benefit from being close to the airport, the Island Highway and nearby communities. YCD’s central location also puts it next to the Island rail corridor, which could become another transportation link if passenger rail returns.

The Nanaimo Airport Commission is also planning for future growth in air travel. The work looks ahead to the facilities and services needed if passenger numbers increase. Millions have already been invested in infrastructure upgrades.

Possible improvements include a larger terminal with more check‑in counters, bigger departure and baggage areas, a restaurant, and Customs facilities that could support international flights.

Better ground access is also part of the vision. One idea is to create a new intersection at Vowels Road with its own traffic light.

These long‑term plans would be built as demand and opportunities grow. They reflect a broader vision for YCD: an airport that connects people by air and also serves as a centre for business, transportation and economic development in the region.
