Airport’s infrastructure plans chart flight path for future
1 July 2025
Nanaimo Airport Commission (NAC) is preparing for the future with a slate of strategic infrastructure investments over the next decade.
The major capital priorities will enhance passenger services, support improved reliability and create opportunities for new routes. The economic spin-offs will be felt throughout the region.
The largest and most visible change for travellers will be a planned expansion of the Airport Terminal Building. With an estimated cost of $110 million, the project will ensure the airport can meet anticipated growth in travel.
The work is laid out in a modular design strategy developed by NAC. It calls for construction to proceed when demand requires it and funding is available.
Another significant upgrade is the airport’s planned transition to a precision runway approach. The system will allow aircraft to land more accurately in poor weather, reducing cancellations and delays. It will also improve access for emergency, medical and cargo flights.
A third key project that could shape the airport’s future is Nav Canada’s possible upgrade from a Flight Service Station (FSS) to a full Air Traffic Control Tower (ATC). This change would improve safety, allow the airport to handle more flights, and reduce weather-related delays. Having an ATC is a major factor for airlines when evaluating route viability.
Both FSS and ATC services are provided by Nav Canada, the organization that manages Canada’s civil air navigation system.
The other major infrastructure anticipated within the next 10 years is a $7.5-million project to construct two new airport entrances and an internal road network. The work would improve access and traffic flow. It is needed to support long-term growth and efficiency.
