Powerful cultural symbol welcomes travellers to airport
A remarkable Coast Salish hummingbird carving now greets travelers at Nanaimo Airport (YCD), inviting them to reflect on the rich history and living culture of the land they travel through.
Created by Stz’uminus artist Jason Harris, the new cultural centerpiece graces the terminal’s screening area. It’s a vibrant expression of First Nations identity and artistry, and a shared commitment to reconciliation.
The hummingbird is a symbol of peace, healing, and welcome in Coast Salish culture. The carving marks a meaningful step toward building stronger partnerships between the airport and First Nations communities.
“It’s not only a beautiful work of art but also a symbol of collaboration between the Nanaimo Airport Commission and Stz’uminus First Nation as we work together towards reconciliation goals,” says airport President and CEO Dave Devana.
The carving was unveiled during a ceremony rich in cultural significance with Stz’uminus Nation Chief John Elliott and Cowichan Tribes Chief Cindy Daniels in attendance. Harris and his mentor, renowned Coast Salish artist Luke Marston, were on hand as were friends and family. Beverly David, Daniella David, and George Harris performed traditional singing and drumming.
Devana and board chair Colleen Johel, vice-chair Garth Busch, and secretary Mark Taylor represented Nanaimo Airport Commission. They all expressed appreciation for the opportunity to share the moment with the Stz’uminus Nation.
Displaying the carving in a prominent space reflects the airport’s commitment to relationship building, partnership, and respect for First Nations.
