Prep like a pro with Nanaimo Airport’s winter travel tips

Nanaimo Airport (YCD) is the Island’s most convenient launch point to global destinations this winter.

YCD offers a shorter drive, easier parking, quicker check-in and security, and more personal help when you need it. Connecting flights through major hubs put most locations within easy reach. And there’s no need for additional costs such as ferry fare and hotel.

To help you make a smooth trip, Nanaimo Airport offers the following winter travel tips:

Be ready for rain, sun
You’re dressing for two climates: cool, wet Island weather to the airport, and warm, dry weather when you land. Wear light layers to YCD (waterproof shell over a tee), then stow the shell in your carry-on for arrival.

  • Pack a hat, sunglasses, and a light change of clothes near the top of your carry-on so you can switch right after landing.
  • Bring meds, chargers, and a power bank in your carry-on.
  • Wear comfy shoes you can slip on/off for security. Sandals can go in your bag.
  • Leave heavier winter gear in your car for the return if you’re parking at YCD.

Be ready for security

Know security screening procedures and go “pockets empty, jacket open.” Keep ID and boarding pass handy. Place laptops and large electronics where they’re easy to remove. If you’ll travel over the holidays, wrap gifts at your destination. Unwrapped items move faster through screening.

Be ready on travel day

Turn on airline app/text alerts and check YCD’s live flight status before leaving home. Also look at travel advisories. Arrive about 90 minutes before domestic departures to allow for parking and check-in. Check DriveBC.ca for highway conditions before you set out and give yourself extra driving time.

Be ready to park

Download the Honk app and use it to pay for parking for up to 17 days. If your trip will be more than 17 days, use a Pay by Plate kiosk to get a lower rate.
