Nanaimo Airport YCD Unveils Hummingbird Carving by Stz’uminus Artist Jason Harris

NANAIMO, B.C. – The Nanaimo Airport (YCD) proudly unveiled a stunning new Coast Salish hummingbird carving, beautifully crafted by Stz’uminus artist Jason Harris. The piece, commissioned by the airport, now graces the screening area of the airport terminal building, serving as a powerful cultural symbol and a warm welcome to travelers.
The private unveiling ceremony was held this morning and featured a gathering of community members and leaders. In attendance were Stz’uminus Nation Chief John Elliott, Cowichan Tribes Chief Cindy Daniels, and Coast Salish artist Jason Harris, accompanied by his mentor, renowned Coast Salish artist Luke Marston.
The event also included traditional singing and drumming performances by Beverly David, Daniella David, and George Harris, who added rich cultural significance to the celebration. Friends and family of the artist joined in the moment, highlighting the strong sense of community that surrounds the creation and presentation of this meaningful artwork.
Representing the Nanaimo Airport Commission were President and CEO Dave Devana, Board Chair Colleen Johel, Board Vice Chair Garth Busch, and Board Secretary Mark Taylor, all of whom expressed deep appreciation and gratitude for the opportunity to share this moment with the Stz’uminus Nation.
“This carving is not only a beautiful work of art, but also a symbol of collaboration between the Nanaimo Airport Commission and Stz’uminus First Nation as we work together towards reconciliation goals,” said Dave Devana. “We are honoured to have this extraordinary piece by Jason Harris displayed at YCD, and we thank him for this collaboration and hard work.”
