Tips for making summer travel connections smoother

3 July 2026

Summer is a busy time to fly. More people are travelling, airports are busier, and connections can feel a little tighter. A bit of planning before you leave Nanaimo Airport can help make the rest of your trip easier.

Pack your carry-on so the things you may need at security screening are easy to find. Keep your ID, boarding pass, liquids bag, medications, and larger electronics near the top of your bag.

Also watch for “hidden liquids.” Sunscreen, bug spray, lip balm, gels, creams, spreads, and some food items may count as liquids, aerosols, or gels. Full-size sunscreen is fine in checked baggage. Travel-size sunscreen in your carry-on must follow the 100 ml rule.

Screening procedures can vary from airport to airport. Before you get to the front of the security line, empty your pockets and be ready to remove items such as coats, belts, laptops, or liquids if you’re asked.

If you’re connecting through another airport, try not to book the shortest layover available. A connection that looks fine when you book can become stressful if your first flight is delayed, your next gate is far away, or you need to clear customs or security again.

At check-in, ask whether your checked bags are going all the way to your final destination. You may need to collect and re-check them at your connection. This is especially important for some international trips.

When you land, check your airline app or the airport screens for your next gate before stopping for food, coffee, or shopping. Boarding usually starts well before the posted departure time, and gates can close before the flight leaves.

Starting your trip from Nanaimo Airport gives you easier access and a more relaxed beginning. With a little preparation, your summer travel day can be smoother from the start.
