Nanaimo Airport makes travel more accessible
Nanaimo Airport (YCD) continues to expand its accessibility features, introducing new tools and infrastructure to support travellers with disabilities, medical needs, or mobility challenges. These improvements are part of the airport’s ongoing Accessibility Plan.
“We work to remove barriers and create an environment that is fully accessible to all,” says Dave Devana, Nanaimo Airport President and CEO.
Some of the initiatives include:
- Pet relief areas
The airport’s two designated pet relief spaces support travellers flying with service animals or emotional‑support pets. One is outside, at the south end of the terminal in the grassy area, The the other is inside, past security screening. The stainless steel indoor area includes fake grass, a litter box, a hose and other necessities.
Both areas are designed for quick, hygienic use and help reduce stress for passengers who rely on trained animals.
- Digital accessibility tools on ycd.ca
The airport added the UserWay program to its website pages, indicated by a blue human icon in the lower-left corner. Clicking on it allows users to adjust text size, contrast, spacing, and more. The features improve online navigation for people with visual, cognitive, or motor impairments.
- Curbside and other assistance
You can book in advance to arrange for YCD staff to help you when you arrive. You may also be eligible for a gate escort pass, which would allow one person to accompany you through security screening to your gate.
- Hearing loops
These systems are installed at airline counters, the customer service desk, and all boarding gates. They transmit clear audio directly to T‑coil–equipped hearing aids and cochlear implants, cutting through background noise.
With these and other upgrades, Nanaimo Airport continues its commitment to ensuring every passenger can move through the terminal with greater comfort, clarity, and confidence. The goal is to deliver an airport experience that is inclusive, supportive, and responsive to diverse needs.
