YCD, NightOwls sending local fans to Calgary Stampede

1 June 2026

One lucky Central Vancouver Island baseball fan and three guests will head to the iconic Calgary Stampede this summer thanks to a partnership between Nanaimo Airport (YCD) and the Nanaimo NightOwls.

The “Home plate to Stampede” contest will reward the winner with round-trip flights for four from the airport to Calgary. Once there they’ll spend three nights at Hotel Arts Calgary, and enjoy admission to a rodeo and the Stampede Evening Show.

The winner will be selected during the NightOwls game on June 5 at Serauxmen Stadium. Six finalists will be chosen to compete for the prize. An on-field challenge will see them spin around a baseball bat before sprinting down the baseline for a cornhole toss. Contestants must be present at the game to participate.

“This is a pretty incredible prize package,” says YCD President and CEO Dave Devana. “It combines travel, entertainment, and one of Canada’s iconic summer events. We wanted to create something memorable for local families and baseball fans.”

The promotion also highlights the airport’s direct Calgary service and the ease of travelling from YCD. Travellers can access major events and destinations around the world without travelling off-Island first

The contest continues a growing partnership between Nanaimo Airport and the Nanaimo NightOwls. The Canadian collegiate summer baseball team plays in the West Coast League.

“The NightOwls have built a strong following and a real sense of excitement around summer baseball,” says Devana. “It’s a natural fit for us to work together on something that gives people a chance to travel and experience how convenient YCD can be.”

The airport frequently partners with local organizations and events to help strengthen community ties and raise awareness of the services available at YCD.
