Nanaimo Airport makes travel more accessible
1 May 2025
Accessibility is central to how Nanaimo Airport (YCD) serves the region. Its accessibility plan outlines practical steps the airport takes to ensure everyone — regardless of ability — can access services equitably, respectfully, and without barriers.
The plan was shaped by feedback from passengers, staff, community partners, and stakeholders. It focuses on the design and delivery of programs and services, and supports YCD’s strategic goal of delivering top-quality customer care.
“By listening to community voices and reviewing our facilities through an accessibility lens, we’re providing a travel experience that’s safe, respectful, and welcoming for all,” says airport CEO Dave Devana.
To support travellers with visible and invisible disabilities, YCD offers a range of accessibility services throughout the airport journey:
- Curbside assistance for both departing and arriving passengers, bookable online or by phone at 250-924-2157 ext.1200.
- Wheelchair service, available at the terminal for those who haven’t pre-arranged one with their airline.
- Sunflower Lanyard Program to discreetly identify travellers who may need additional support.
- Pre-booked terminal tours to help familiarize passengers with the check-in, screening, and boarding process.
- Escort passes, issued by airlines, so support persons can accompany passengers through security.
These services are part of a broader commitment to accessible travel. Nanaimo Airport has also improved signage, installed accessible seating near gates, and provided charging stations with lower counter heights.
Accessible washrooms, including large family-style and gender-neutral options, are located throughout the terminal. They feature automatic doors, grab bars, and space for mobility aids or service animals.
Outside the terminal, accessible transportation options include designated parking, accessible taxis and shuttles, and BC Transit service with curbside pickup.
